Ingredients of Healthy Karela Tikki

  • 2 big karelas (bitter gourd)
  • 1/2 cup low-fat paneer, grated
  • 1 onion
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1-inch ginger
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 cup coriander leaves
  • 1 cup besan
  • 1 tsp amchur powder/ chaat masala
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp haldi powder
  • 1/2 tsp ajwain seeds
  • to taste Salt
  • Oil for pan-frying

How to Make Healthy Karela Tikki


1. Wash the karela thoroughly and grate the outer part well. Transfer the grated karela to a mixer-grinder and form a coarse mixture. Add 1 tsp salt to this mixture and keep aside for 30 minutes.


2. Finely chop the onions, chillies, ginger, garlic and coriander leaves. Keep them ready in a large mixing bowl.


3. Later, squeeze out the water from the karela mixture and add the karela to the bowl.


4. Add the paneer as well as the spice masalas listed above. Mix the ingredients and then add ajwain seeds and besan. Combine well and taste to adjust salt.


5. Break off small pieces of the mixture and flatten them to make round patties/ tikkis. Pan-fry them on medium flame until golden brown. Serve karela tikkis hot with green chutney.
